  • There is no specialty on-call service for Respiratory Medicine at SJH.
  • Mon-Fri: there is a Respiratory in-reach ward round starting in MAU from 0900-1100. This will cover referrals from MAU and other wards in SJH.
    • If the patient is being admitted these patients should be referred to the respiratory in reach team with a TRAK referral.
    • After 1100, urgent respiratory referrals should be directed to the MAU Med Reg, or may be discussed at cons-to-cons level with the morning in-reach consultant.
  • A Respiratory Nurse practitioner is available for Specialist Nurse review 0830-1600 Mon-Fri. Contact bleep - 3051.
  • If these patients are being discharged they should email loth.sjhrespiratory@nhs.scot at the time of discharge

Respiratory nurse practitioners

From January 2024, the respiratory nurse practitioner out-reach service has expanded. They are aiming to provide a more front door focused service. The In Reach RNP will be reviewing referred patients in the morning alongside the Consultant and then in the afternoon will be monitoring Trak for suitable patients, with the aim of discharging from the front door +/- REACT input.

Generally, the RNP will review COPD patients who you think might be suitable for d/c with a little support, require nurse led follow-up or may need inhaler technique/medication changes. They will also see ILD and bronchiectasis patients who you think may be suitable, or you feel they require follow-up.

You can still refer a patient directly to REACT respiratory ANPs if you feel this is the appropriate pathway.

If you have any patients who are suitable, please bleep #3051. The RNP will be available from 8-4 weekdays.

Outpatient referrals

Outpatient follow-up can be made for certain respiratory complains (e.g. spontaneous pneumothorax, chest x-ray abnormalities) by emailing loth.sjhrespiratory@nhs.scot
