Warning

Adult Learning Disability Speech and Language Therapists work with adults who have learning disabilities as part of the Scottish Borders Learning Disabilities Service.

The Speech and Language Therapy team work together with families/carers, support providers, colleagues and adults with Learning Disabilities to support best outcomes for speech, language, communication and swallowing. Details on how to refer can be found below.

The Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) department consists of Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) and Speech and Language Therapy Assistants (SLTAs).

We provide support to Adults with Learning Disabilities at the following three levels:

Universal

  • For all adults with Learning Disabilities.
  • Support the development of communication friendly environments.
  • Promote well-being for adults with Learning Disabilities and their families and support staff.

Targeted

  • For adults with Learning Disabilities more likely to be identified as having speech, language and communication needs.
  • SLT provide specific advice, programmes, training workshops and support to target speech, language and communication needs, and eating, drinking and swallowing needs.
  • Production of easy read and accessible information to support adults with Learning Disabilities understanding of written information.

Specialist

  • Support adults with Learning Disabilities whose needs cannot be met through universal or targeted support.
  • SLT provides direct or indirect assessment and intervention, involving families/carers, professionals, support staff and others through an outcomes based approach.
  • SLT provides assessment and provision of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
